Simply put, neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to create and rewire new neural pathways. Contrary to common belief that young brains have a corner on making fresh mind connections and learning new things, the brain boasts regenerative plasticity throughout the entire lifespan.
Prior to founding ReimagineArt Mobile Art Studio, I enjoyed several decades as a mental health professional. People came to me who were stuck in some sort of situation, thought, or behavior pattern where they wanted to see change. While they were able to intellectualize the need for a new way, they frustrated over the difficulty of real and lasting transformation.
I always appreciated when reluctant clients took a step of faith by being willing to engage in the very personal and vulnerable act of creating art as a catalyst for change. The reward for their courage was first-hand experience and a deep understanding of how the creative, expressive arts earn superpower status for their ability to fire up all of the brain’s regenerative cylinders: cognitive, emotional, and executive, and to blaze new neural pathways in starchy, habit-prone heads.
Artists intuitively understand the inherent powers of applied creativity to open new fields of thought possibility, spark new solutions to old problems, to soothe and bring clarity, even to affect real and lasting change – but you don’t have to be a professional artist to enjoy all of this goodness. Engaging in the creative arts at any level unleashes far reaching personal and collective benefits.
